Never in my dream had I thought that a Kingfisher would be a small bird and I feel very embarrassed to say so. Not larger than a pigeon, it has a beautiful blue back, wings and tail while its head, neck and under parts is chocolate brown. The throat and the breast are white. Their dark red bills are large, heavy and pointed and legs bright red. In flight their white patches are visible. The bird is also called Smyrna Kingfisher and White Brested Kingfisher and is a tree kingfisher of the family Halcyonidae.
In my observation since last three months I have come across only one white throated kingfisher at Shantinagar, Singtam and I am told that this particular bird lives in a hole of a tree build by a wood-pecker.
