Anoplocnemis phasiana (sap sucking insect) - Sikkim Insect
Anoplocnemis phasiana, commonly known as the leaf-footed bug, sap sucking insect, or tip-withering bug, is a prominent member of the family Coreidae within the order Hemiptera. Native to Asia, this species is widely distributed throughout the Oriental and Ethiopian regions, including extensive records across India, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia. In India, it has been documented in various states, such as Sikkim, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Kerala.
This insect is
distinguished by its large, blackish-brown body and the pronounced leaf-like
expansions on the hind legs of males. It features a vibrant, brick-red abdomen
that serves as warning coloration, and it utilizes a pungent, foul-smelling
defense secretion from its thoracic glands to deter predators.
As a specialized sap-feeder, it uses a piercing-sucking rostrum to consume plant nutrients, and it is recognized as a strong flyer capable of traversing significant distances.
