Patterned Forest Huntsman - Sikkim Spider
The Patterned Forest Huntsman (Heteropoda species)
Also a member of the
Sparassidae family, the spider represents a different species within the
Heteropoda genus (or closely related Barylestis), typically more adapted to the
Indo-Himalayan forest ecosystems. Its distribution is more localized to the
humid, high-altitude regions of South Asia, including the forested foothills of
Gangtok.
Unlike its domestic cousin, this species features a high-contrast dorsal pattern, specifically a dark, lobed "mask" on its cephalothorax and a sharp vertical stripe on the abdomen. Its special features include exceptionally elongated, slender legs designed for navigating uneven forest terrain and rocks, and a more aggressive camouflage pattern that mimics the dappled shadows of the Himalayan leaf litter.
