Neptis hylas ( Common Sailor) - Sikkim Butterfly

This lovely butterfly is the Common Sailer, belonging to the brush-footed butterfly family Nymphalidae, genus Neptis, and species Neptis hylas.

In appearance, it is easily recognized by its velvety brownish-black wings patterned with crisp white stripes and bands, along with a rich golden underside. Native to tropical Asia, it has a wide distribution spanning the Indian subcontinent, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia. It loves sunny roadsides, hedgerows, and foothill forests, gliding effortlessly with its wings held flat like a little sailboat.

Historically, it was named in 1758 by the famous scientist Carl Linnaeus and later studied by naturalists exploring the Himalayas. Ecologically, it holds great significance by pollinating local flowering plants, reminding us that nature flourishes right outside our windows.
