Heteropoda venatoria (Giant Huntsman) - Sikkim Spider
The Giant Huntsman
belongs to the family Sparassidae and the genus Heteropoda. Originally native
to tropical regions of Asia, it has achieved a pantropical distribution,
spreading across the globe via trade routes. In Sikkim, it is a common
commensal species often found in homes and school buildings.
This spider is characterized by its remarkable speed and its "laterigrade" leg orientation, which allows it to scuttle sideways into tight crevices like a crab. Its most distinguishing visual feature is the clypeal band—a prominent white or cream-colored "moustache" across its face—and its lack of a web, as it is a nocturnal pursuit hunter that relies on lightning-fast reflexes to capture prey.
