Ypthima huebneri (Common Four ring) - Sikkim Butterfly

This charming insect is the Common Fourring (or Common Four-ring). It belongs to the brush-footed butterfly family Nymphalidae (subfamily Satyrinae, the browns), genus Ypthima, and species Ypthima huebneri.

For identification, its delicate appearance features soft, grayish-brown wings etched with fine rippled patterns underneath. You can easily spot the large, dark "eyespot" ringed in yellow near the tip of its forewing, alongside smaller ringed spots on the lower wing that mimic animal eyes to scare away birds.

Native to South and Southeast Asia, its distribution stretches from mainland India and Sri Lanka all the way to Southeast Asia, where it flutters low through open grasslands and sunny shrub borders.

Historically, this butterfly was named in 1871 in honour of the pioneer German butterfly scientist Jacob Hübner. Ecologically, it plays a vital role pollinating wild blossoms and garden shrubs while keeping our grassland food webs healthy.
